The most unique corrections experience, in my opinion, is one of the women. Women encounter different experiences than other offenders through being less violent in prisons, diverse pathways of the criminal justice system, there is not helpful programming for women, and women are placed in more secure facilities (pg. 245). As stated in chapter 11, “there have been fewer women and girls incarcerated or under correctional supervision than there have been men and boys” (pg. 237). This is very important to note because since fewer women and girls are incarcerated, it doesn’t allow for a better experience to help the women in prison. Abuse is a big part of women entering the criminal justice system and may be a reason as to why they are in jail. Programs or changes that could be made to improve the corrections experiences of women. Since corrections systems have more programs for males, I believe it is important that correction systems include programs provided to females to have a better experience. However, changes are more important than programs, in my opinion. The systems should find ways to help the women who are imprisoned, such as having female matrons, having discipline orders, having a better staff operating the facility, and teach staff about sexual and gender harassment. Overall, I believe it is important for more research to be conducted to help women in correctional facilities to make changes and create programs.

Chapter 11 focuses on women and corrections, disciplining women in prison, and the growth in numbers of women and girls in prison. Women were seen as the minority in prisons but overtime, their numbers have increased in inmates and workers. Women were less likely to commit crimes such as murder, robberies, burglaries, and larcnies while men were most likely to commit these specific crimes. Over time, the drug war has raised the number of women committing crimes which results in an increase of women in prison. You might think that because they are women, they would get a lighter discipline but according to the text, “the discipline of women was quite severe, and women were beaten or placed in solitary confinement to enforce it” (pg, 572). Many of the women in prisons go through abuse and difficulty in adjusting in the prison system. Female correctional officers also increased but they have to deal with sexual and gender harassment from the male correctional officers or staff. Some programs that could be made to improve their corrections experience could be a safe and comfortable medical institution that provides anything for a female’s needs. Another program that could be made to improve their corrections experience could safe staffing that keeps the female inmates and staff comfortable and safe. Programs that focus on mental and physical health would also be important to improve their corrections experience as that is something important to maintain healthy.
