The Jeffersonian era was a remarkable time in American history. Once we gained independence what was the United States? In this chapter some of the larger political developments are explored. Indeed this is a time of intense change. Established religion attempts to regain or perhaps redefine the role of religion and the secular nation. The Second Great Awakening inspires evangelical fervor, but also runs into the reality of religious pluralism. Industrialism emerges in the Northeast while an entrenched slave race agrarian economy becomes entrenched in South.
The Louisiana purchase doubles the size of the United States and the exploits of Lewis and Clark both excite and educate Americans. Indians facing pressure from white expansion rally around the vision of Tenkswatawa and diplomatic skill of Tecumseh.
Finally, the War of 1812 ties these strands together. This should be fertile ground for discussion.
