In groups of 3-4, students will select a topic to debate from the following: gender, wealth and poverty, youth cultures and religion.
Specific debate questions will be provided, which are based on content covered in the slides of the relevant weeks. There will be time in class to discuss the debate questions prior to the debate weeks.
The debates will follow a formal structure, where all presenting students are required to speak, and prepare points for rebuttal.
To do well in this task you will need to:
• Present a cohesive group presentation and argument (not three individual speeches) • Support your arguments with evidence • Engage with the arguments of the opposing team (providing rebuttals and counter-arguments to each speaker on the opposing team) • Use creative strategies to engage your audience (e.g. eye contact, appropriate tone, wit, etc.)
Each student will be required to submit a copy of their own debate notes (including pre-written speeches and rebuttals), and a reference list including all sources used in their debate via Turnitin by the end of the day on which their debate occurs.
