Rasing a Baby of a Different ethnicity

Rasing a Baby of a Different ethnicity
The social history of your pretend baby “raised” as a biological child in an ethnic group or culture other than yours (insert the name of your pretend culture), which you pretend is yours. For your Final paper pick an ethnic group other than your own, in consultation with the instructor. It will be your responsibility to “raise” the baby. The infants will be female or male from one ethnic group. You will choose one of the following ethnic groups, but if this list omits the group you really wish to study let the instructor know: Native Americans: Sioux, Iroquois, Cherokee, Navajo and especially those in Wisconsin, e.g. Oneida and Monamine; Asians (Japanese, Chinese, SE Asians (Hmong, Vietnamese, Pacific Islanders, Filipino); Arab (Lebanese, Iranian, Iraqi, Sudanese, Egyptians, Libyans, Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians), Africans (Kenyans, Nigerians, etc., African Americans, Jamaicans etc., Hispanic (Chicano, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Mexicans and other Central Americans, e.g. Chileans, Brazilians, Nicaraguans etc.; Jewish, Amish, Mormons etc and the many European groups in the US.: Asian, Chicano/or Latino, Native American, Middle Eastern, and African American. You could also pretend that at birth or during the child’s life, your child will face a challenge such as mental or physical impairment, sexual preference issues, genetic defect, etc.

In order to do this you must:

1. become familiar with the psychological, biological, sociological, spiritual and environmental developmental tasks of human growth and development (Hutchinson, Chs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7).

2. become familiar (really learn about) the ethnic group of which you pretended to be a part. Each student is required to find and read one book from his/her ethnicity.

Develop culturally sensitive “parenting” techniques that work for the entire ethnic group. You may choose to have an extended or nuclear family arrangement, etc.
Identify ways in which your chosen ethnic group members introduce the child to and evaluate their effectiveness.
Find written materials (books and /or journal articles, videos, DVDs, expert or native speakers appropriate to the group, interview people from the particular ethnic group of which you are a part, and take
advantage of other community resources, i.e., museums, ethnic organizations, etc.
