Discussion: President Dwight Eisenhower took the reins of power in 1953
in the United States. In tandem with his pugnacious secretary of state,
John Foster Dulles, the president made changes in the direction of U.S.
foreign policy such as a more aggressive rhetoric, the reliance on the
threat of massive retaliation, and the use of covert operations.
