final essay.

Purpose:

  • Annotated Bibliographies give students a chance to gather and assess their research before using it in formal writing.
  • By graphing this annotated bibliography’s sources, students will assess what types of sources have been are gathered and have time to find more sources if you need more of a certain type of source.
  • This will also turn into your final essay’s works cited which will save you time at the end of the term.

Process:

  1. Gather at least eight resources you will use in your final essay. Of the total eight:
    1. Two must be peer-reviewed academic journal articles.
    2. One must be a book with page numbers.
    3. One must be a non-traditional source (Ex: Google Trends, Twitter, Reddit, etc.)
    4. All other sources must be highly credible for your purposes. Use the library’s CRAAP test if you need help assessing the quality of a website.
    5. Wikipedia is not allowed.
    6. Interviews given by you are not allowed.
    7. Any source you use must be a documented source I could look up myself through the internet or library.
  2. Look at Cornell University’s guide on producing Annotated Bibliographies: https://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
  3. Put all eight of your sources into bibliography form (Works Cited) with their citations. Don’t forget to alphabetize your list. See an example Works Cited here:: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_sample_works_cited_page.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
  4. Choose one of your peer-reviewed scholarly articles. Write an annotation of about 150 words describing that source. Look again at the annotations on Cornell University’s website for tips on how to do this (see link in number 2 of this list). *For the sake of time, you do not need to write more than one annotation. But know that in future college classes when you are asked to write an annotated bibliography, you will be expected to annotate all of your sources.
  5. Place each of your sources on the graph given in class, deciding to what degree each source is popular, scholarly, traditional, or non-traditional. You may put dots on the graph by hand and type up a key, or recreate the graph on your own digitally.

Grading Criteria:

  • Submissions must conform to MLA format (Times New Roman 12pt font, 1” margins, double spacing, proper indentations for Bibliographies, etc.)
  • Sources must total at least eight and meet the minimum guidelines for scholarly articles and non-traditional sources. All sources must clearly relate to your final essay topic.
  • Annotation for the selected article must be accurate and succinct.
  • Bibliography (Works Cited) entries must be accurate down to the last detail.
  • The graph must reflect careful thought about sources.
  • (I uploaded the example, please complete it as required.)
