The purpose of this assignment is for students to critically analyse a recent health promotion initiative in terms of the Ottawa Charter and the Jakarta Declaration. This will reveal just how well the WHO principles are understood by the student. It also promotes critical analysis of interventions by analysing the extent to which they are being applied in the literature. You must answer the following questions:
• Were all aspects of the Ottawa Charter implemented? This means you have to show how each principle was used or not.
• Were all aspects of the Jakarta Declaration used? (Answer as above)
• How were equity principles addressed?
• How can the intervention be improved to address all principles of both Charters? This requires that you make at least five recommendations to improve the intervention.
Students are expected to think carefully, identify each principle of the two documents and evaluate whether they were applied, or not, also to question the strategies used by identify strengths and weaknesses in the article ie evaluate and judge it in terms of the Who docs.
Students need to make recommendations as to how the initiative selected for critical analysis could be improved i.e. what principles were not used or not applied well and how could they have been applied? To do this, students will need to be familiar with the topic and current thinking ie reading of the recent literature is essential to find evidence and arguments to back up comments.
